I promised to give you an example of a stupid question in my lectures. Well, this one isn't from Anglistics but from Information Science. We spoke about Relevance Ranking (that's the stuff Google does to give you good results). There are three different versions... the first one is the Power Law. You can describe it with C/x^a. The second one, the inverse logistic version, has a pretty complicated e-function. And the last one, the binary version... well, it's either "1" or "0". If it is relevant in any way, it's "1". If it's not relevant at all, it's "0". Someone asked if there is a formula for the binary system.

Well..
if relevant: 1 else 0?
Oh I see what you mean...

There is no actual function for that.

Other example, same course (it's actually not the lecture itself, but an accompanying exercise)... The exercise instructor gave us a task.

Web of Science gave us 15 relevant and 6 irrelevant results for the term "Information Retrieval", and 24 relevant documents were not displayed. How many relevant results were found.
A. 6
B. 15
C. 24
D. 9

There were actually some people who chose D.

I don't understand the question perfectly.
Is the answer B?

Of course it is. The answer is given in the question.

RE: the english Laberthread (the fine british way!) - LuminFlare - 22.11.2014, 08:39

Oh I thought documents are also counted as result. Oh well FS grins

RE: the english Laberthread (the fine british way!) - Morasain - 22.11.2014, 16:08

Um, actually, the 15 results are documents as well, and so are the 6 irrelevant result. Everything on the internet is a document.

RE: the english Laberthread (the fine british way!) - LuminFlare - 23.11.2014, 09:17

Oh well, there is no reason to pick D anyway.
